Steel companies and Mining Companies
The impact caused by mining activities is unavoidable. According to some studies, threatened species from the Urucum Hill – which stores the third greatest iron ore and manganese reserve of Brazil – will be extinct by the mineral exploitation. Likewise, in Bolivia, the scenario is similar. With the establishment of steel poles (proposed for the cities of Corumbá/Brazil and Porto Suarez/Bolivia) new negative impacts will rise such as: water, air and soil contamination and permanent droughts of rivers. The production chain also poses important threats: the steel sector uses charcoal as a source of energy, therefore, intensifying logging. At the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, more than 5 thousand irregular charcoal kilns are found. Moreover, exports of mining will fasten the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway, which, as proven, can provoke major changes in the whole system’s dinamics.
