Paraguay-Paraná Waterway
Currently, large barges navigate the Paraguay River already brings impacts to the environment of Pantanal. Barges’ collisions with the river banks open new artificial paths and provoke siltation. At the Tayamã Ecological Reserve and partly at the Pantanal National Park, barge conveys have systematically destroyed curves, ravines, marginal embankments as well as displaced marginal aquatic and terrestrial vegetation. Navigation also promotes the invasion of exotic species in the Pantanal ecosystem, carried by the water ballast or stuck in the ships’ hull. With the establishment of the ore and steel pole, the ferry boat traffic will increase and will interfere with the water dynamics and quality. Furthermore, it will impede tourism related activities and professional fishery.
