Deforestation
Deforestation: Pantanal loses more than 3 million hectares, or 2,3% of its area – per year. If nothing changes, Pantanal might disappear in 45 years, according to the study conduced by the Conservation International. Figures are alarming: 17% of the original vegetation of the Brazilian Pantanal had already been removed, and, during this decade, the deforestation pace increased five times comparing with the last decade. Direct consequences are soil losses and river siltation, with negative impacts to the natural floodplain dynamic and biodiversity. As an example, the Taquari River, one affluent from the Paraguay River, is currently considered by the Department of the Environment/Brazil as one of the country’s greatest environmental disaster.
