Dams in the Pantanal

Other significant impacts that affect the maintenance of the water in the region (flood and draught cycles) are the hydroelectric plants in the tributaries of the Paraguay River. There area already several hydroelectric plants built in the Manso, Itiquira, Correntes, Sepotuba and Jauru Rivers. Other dams are being established at the São Lourenço River and Coxim River. The major problem is that the cumulative impacts of of hydroelectric plants are unknown. The prognosis is worring: there are other 44 large and small hydroelectric plants planned at the Upper Paraguay River Basin.

The effects can be disastrous: to illustrate, a decrease of 25 centimeters in the level of the Paraguay River, due to damming or canal locks, could generate a decrease up to 22% of the flooded area of Pantanal. The phenomenon would be devastating not only to the ecosystem, but it would also affect the region’s economy.
