Alcohol and sugar plants for biofuels

Up to the present moment, civil society was able to prevent alcohol plants from being established at the Upper Paraguay River Basin (BAP). Nevertheless, it is not acknowledged how long it will resist to the pressure made by investors and governments. Alcohol plants and sugar monocultures at BAP represent accidents risks and biodiversity loss to the ecosystem. The worst issue is vinasse, a byproduct, that, if cast directly on the water (as it happens in several cases), leads to an intensive disoxygenation, which results the killing of fauna. Besides vinasse, the productive cycle at alcohol plants throws down a huge amount of other pollutants to the soil. Even the establishment of the plant at the basin plateau can provoke soil contamination and siltation of the Pantanal’s rivers. Moreover, the
